new female rider on the Eastern Shore

Post by Guest on Sat Jul 10, 2010 7:47 am

Hi all, new female rider here. I went through the MSF course, found a small "beater bike," and am trying to apply and remember everything I learned. Any other new riders out there on the Eastern Shore?

it's nothing special, just a '02 Honda Rebel that needs a good cleaning, etc... my "baby" is a '02 Honda 750 Shadow ACE which was my "MSF graduation present" and sitting in the garage waiting for me to get much more confident

i'll try to post both

Welcome to the group.

From someone who is not far from just a newbie, a very meaningful suggestion.

Go to Wal-mart and for around $10 you can buy these cone like things at you put under furniture legs to raise it up, they look like small cone. Next ask the best rider you know to help you. then find a BIG empty parking lot. Take those cones out and for about a day and a half go through the riding drills until you can shift, swerve, Stop and go, slow and go, and get off the mark without stalling out and really not having to think about it, like you do in a car. You'll automatically know where your brakes, clutch, and shifter are.

As Dragon told me, MSF course is great it teaches you how to operated a bike. This teaches you how to ride one. I put almost 35 miles on my bike just learning to do this. But it's made me a better rider.

Just my suggestion.

After that or while you're doing that, find a quiet neighborhood and do the left, right turn thing with signals, stop and starts at stop signs. Flat out riding is easy, this is what take finesse.

Welcome from another Lady Rider. Glad you are with us.

thanks for the welcome! what would you like to know about me (other than i'm probably just as certifiable as the rest of you!)

i had a similar suggestion from my MSF instructor, except he suggested taking old tennis balls, cutting them in half and using those for my pylons

i have no problem remembering where everything is or shifting/clutching (i've driven stick shifts for longer than some of you have probably been around LOL and am currently on the search for a little standard ragtop for weekend S & G -- but that's another story) or even taking off without stalling (my instructor even said i was almost too quick getting my feet up and going); my problem is being nervous about, of all things, the throttle; i'm sure that's a pretty common thing for most new riders; at least i know how to apply front and back breaks evenly! LOL

tennis balls are better thats what we use, they dont put you down if you nail one on a bike that doesnt weigh 2 tons {cough} harley {cough}. you'll get in your groove quick with the little bike. everything comes together sooner or later, and even quicker after you put it down a few times.
