"Biker Salute" or "Biker Wave"

Post by Guest on Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:40 pm

Ok folks I have something I been thinking on. I just started riding again this year after many years of not riding. I didnt notice much before untill I started riding this year. What is your opinion on the biker Salute or wave which ever you wanna call it. I notice some folks dont do it and MOST will. I try to be nice to everyone no matter what type of bike they are. Ive even given the waive to folks on small scooters.

Now if I'm not in a position or if its not safe I will maybe give a nod. How do you do it when there is a group of bikers ? Do you waive to just the leader or the tail person, or is it ok for all ?
Why do some do it and some act like they ignore you ? Is it like folks on Harleys only recongize others on harleys ? Me personally I dont care what you ride or if your a member of a club or not.
Ive also seen it when a 2 peeps was on a bike and the passenger was the one that gave the wave. Is that the norm or is just someones preference ?

I know this is probably a silly post to most peeps and I understand, its just one of those things I was thinking on. So whats your opinion on this matter ?

Wave at everyone you see. If they don't wave back you probly don't want to be around them any other time. Some may not see you and others are just stuck up. I really don't care if they wave back or not.
As for a group. Wave as long as you feel comfortable. If your at a bike rally. There is no need to wave. You would have to keep your arm out for three miles.

Very Happy hayweed, Thanks ! I kinda thought some might be just stuck up but then thought maybe they didnt do it cuz I wasnt on their kind of bike. I wasnt trying to single out harleys either. I was just using as example. So I hope I didnt offend anyone that rides a harley.......

I enjoy doing it cuz its one of those things the cagers dont do, lol.......

Not a silly post. This has been discussed all over the place on boards before.

IMO, it is basically a choice of the rider thing. Some do, some don't for various reasons, one being they do not like taking hands off the bars. Me, if it is safe, I wave. If not, I nod. I ride a Harley and wave to everyone, even mopeds and scooters. Kids on the side of the road too (hey, todays fans, tomorrows bikers ).

I am old school, my wave is two fingers down which means two wheels down (shiny side up, keep the rubber down, etc ). If a pack is oncoming I usually hold it till the end (again as long as it is safe ). Again old school is if two up, the passenger "picks up" the wave so the driver can return to the bars and be safer. The passenger should also pick up pack signs when the driver does one again so they can get back to the handlebars (debris in road, road stops, etc ).

Seems to be falling off these days though same as the old school flash your lights means a cop ahead while in any vehicle or the biker signal of a hand on your head meaning the same thing.

Some pack signals are here, but they left off the cop one (Pat the top of your head or helmet )

I been known to use the last one at times, too.

http://www.ridemyown.com/articles/safety/handsignals.shtml

There are others, some groups have their own set of them.

But as for me, wave, don't wave, I am not going to sweat it. Maybe they had something going on and waving would have been unsafe. Or else they were stuckup and hey, you have a shitty day too jackass. geek

No worries.

I wave if its safe to do so....2 fingers down... If I'm shifting up or down and otherwise can't let go, I nod or toss my head up...just some form of recognition. I know I've missed some...and I know some miss me. And yes....some are either not informed or stuck up.

Some people don't like letting go of the handle bars, others are just better than use. Some times you just can't cause of idiots around you. Wave, just be safe. I wave to chicks on pedal bikes too, at least I think they are chicks, hard to tell in them shorts, can't go by the hair anymore. I always wave to scooters, my wife drives one, I want to get in the habit of stopping more when I see a bike on the side. I try not to go over 5 miles of any speed limit, but I refuse to let some car ride next to me, be in my blind spot, or put me in there's. I think cars have this game going on called "beat the motorcycle". They pass you then slow down, I don't understand. Just remember safety first and don't get offended if some one doesn't wave back, never know what they may be going thru.

I usually wave if I am not in the middle of a long text message or waiting for a new internet page to load on my cell phone!

Probably why your arm hurts having to hang on so tight.

I'm sure glad you got all that beef in your bike, I'd hate to have to keep slowing down for you to caught up!

Okay, I learned something. Didn't know that the downward wave incorporated the "two wheels down" good wish. Guess I've been suggesting a lot of riders do a paint-grinding power slide or even a bars-and-seat skid. I'll correct my accent immediately. Embarassed
