Help me with a decision on a bike

Post by Guest on Mon Aug 01, 2011 9:50 am

Recently found a 800cc Vulcan cruiser (2000 model). Im wanting one for me and my wife to start out on. I was wondering about our combined weight on it, which is around 380lbs. Just wondering if I could get some input from the group about it. We would be using it for short trips and just riding. Any input is appreciated.

Welcome to the forums. I view Kawasaki as a pretty good bike usually. Other opinions vary on this model however. They seem to say that year does not have a good stock seat, the rear shocks are hard to adjust and is sluggish with two up in general opinions.

But everyones opinions vary, too. Best to ride it for yourself and have her ride it with you for a few MILEs and see if it will suit your needs. Smile

Weight would be OK...800 used to be considered a large bike until they all got wrapped up in numbers. It would have plenty of power. The question would be the relative size of the bike and how comfortable you both are on it. A short few mile trip is one thing...sitting 2 up in that saddle for a few hours is another thing. The larger the bike...the more comfort for 2 up riding. On the ultra comfortable touring side is the massive Goldwing and the Harley Ultra...huge seats for rider and passenger and all the other amenities. But with that much comfort comes the price tag $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Vulcans have always been very good and dependable bikes. There are many in that genre. So it all boils down to compromise...how much power, reliability and comfort can be bought with X dollars. So 800 cc is adequate...personally...I like bigger! My wife rides a 1300 Honda VTX...she loves it and it has massive power and a relative large size to it. Used ones go fairly cheap. Just a thought!

Thanks for all the feed back,And thanks for all the greeting to the form, I rode bikes when younger. The be honest i'm a vulcan classic fan, the 99 to 2001 model 1500 classic are my favs. love the look and styling. but to start back off and again and then let her have the 800cc to be hers. I think the 800 is good for her to learn on, and to get use to with the two of us to spend time on. To me the 99 - early 2000s are as close to a HD you can get, not cutting HD but just like the Vulacn classic.

Just my personal opinion, but a 500 might be a better starter bike for her. And I am not being biased because I will have a 500 Vulcan up for sale very soon. geek
I have always advised new riders to keep it to 500 or less for the lesser weight and power to be getting used to. I still wanna slap the guy who talked my other half into buying a Night Train for her first bike, which she promptly wrecked more than once (before we met ).

I have ridden nearly all brands and am not brand loyal myself. I have always loved the look and power of the 900 Eliminators. Wink

1500's are really cheap in this area right now as well. Likely go a little lower in the fall.

dragon I know what ur saying, on the 500. I have seen both of the bikes you sent links to, and I always wanted the aqua as in the link. or a burgundy and pearl. and you are so right with the Eliminators , they are a style that was before there time.
